Replace Your Vodka With These Five 'Shiny Substitutions

CocktailsStephanie StantonComment

Vodka doesn’t stand a chance.

You’ve probably heard us tell you (perhaps sometimes a little too forcefully) to replace your vodka with Belle Isle Moonshine–but what does that actually mean? When we talk to customers at events or on Instagram, the top question we get is, “What exactly is moonshine?” We’ve met a lot of people who are initially hesitant to try our spirit, as it’s easy to envision a burly, bearded man offering up mason jars full of peach-flavored rocket fuel. Despite its cultural mythology, moonshine is actually just an un-aged corn spirit that’s distilled to a lower alcohol point than vodka or whiskey. While vodka and moonshine end up around the same 40% ABV mark, our spirit requires less added water to cut the alcohol content down. The result? Less burn, more flavor, and a cleaner finish.

Now that you have some base-level ‘shine knowledge, we’ll move on to another big question we get asked: “How do I use this stuff?” While we totally condone getting as creative as possible with your cocktail experiments, the key to creating a delicious moonshine drink is as simple as just replacing your vodka. Whether your go-to drink is a martini or a mule, here are five of our favorite recipes that show just how easy it is to swap ‘shine in your favorite vodka cocktails.

Martini

Whether you like it dirty or with a twist, a moonshine martini is always a good idea.

A classic martini is the perfect cocktail to showcase the differences between our spirit and a traditional vodka. Made up of only two or three ingredients, the martini can’t mask vodka’s burn. Our OG Black Label moonshine makes a killer martini, but try subbing 100 Proof for a little extra oomph!

Black Label Martini

Ingredients:

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice and stir. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with olives, lemon twist, or any other garnish you'd like. Feel free to customize this recipe to make your ideal martini!

MOSCOW MULE

One mule to rule them all.

It’s no secret that a mule is one of our favorite drinks. Instead of pairing vodka with ginger beer, try your next mule with the sweet heat of our Honey Habanero ‘shine.

Spicy Mule

Ingredients:

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a glass over ice, and garnish with a lime wedge

cosmopolitan

Your old standby gets a citrusy update.

Ditch your old vodka-crans for something a little more elevated. Our bright, bold Blood Orange moonshine is a perfect spirit to revamp that tired Cosmopolitan.

BLOOD ORANGE COSMO

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz. cranberry juice

  • ¾ oz. fresh lime juice

Preparation:

Add all ingredients to a mixing tin over ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass. Garnish with a lime twist, or a dehydrated blood orange.

vodka soda

‘Shine + soda = as simple and tasty as you can get.

Our moonshine is so smooth and flavorful it shines (no pun intended) on its own or with the simple fizz of some soda water. While all of our products are great with soda, we’re partial to this version with Ruby Red Grapefruit.

ruby Spritz

Ingredients:

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a glass over ice.

Bloody Mary

Our Spicy Moonshine Mary is the cure for whatever ails you.

What makes your favorite hangover-relieving brunch drink even better? A jolt of sweet heat from our Honey Habanero moonshine, of course.

Spicy Moonshine Mary

Ingredients:

Preparation:

Add all ingredients to glass with ice, tumble back and forth in mixing tin a few times. Garnish with peppers, olives, lemon, celery, and whatever else strikes your fancy. Add a few extra drops of hot sauce if you're feeling truly spicy!

Belle Isle Moonshine is a premium, handcrafted spirit proudly hailing from Richmond, Virginia.

We take the name Belle Isle from a small, 540-acre island located smack dab in the middle of the James River where Civil War soldiers used surplus corn rations to make moonshine in copper kettles.

Belle Isle Moonshine is distilled from 100% organic corn, grown by three family farms and responsibly sourced. Once triple-distilled, we charcoal filter Belle Isle four times over. Then, we cut it with purified water right from the James River. Our infusions are made with 100% real ingredients, never artificial flavors or color. We use real grapefruits sourced from Texas and California, local honey from the Shenandoah Valley, organic habaneros grown an hour away, and freshly roasted coffee beans from the most socially conscious roastery in Richmond, Blanchard's Coffee Roasting Co.

From there, each bottle of Belle Isle Moonshine is filled, corked, labeled, and packed by hand by our Production team, who check each bottle and batch for quality assurance. Since Belle Isle is made in small batches, you can find the batch number handwritten in the bottom right corner of each bottle.

By now, you know that you deserve to replace your vodka with something ‘shinier–but that doesn’t mean you have to throw it away! We’re not monsters, after all. Vodka has plenty of practical uses that don’t involve your cocktail glass.

Just in time for Spring Cleaning season, we’re sharing some tips to put that tired old spirit to good use–and leave your house looking spotless in the process After countless experiments (and even more cocktails), our Director of Marketing, Brandon Day, developed these three easy ways you can repurpose your old vodka into the perfect Spring Cleaning tool. Oh, and since you know we won't clean (or do anything, really) without a cocktail in hand, we're also sharing a few cocktail recipes to make the whole dirty process a tad 'shinier. Let’s dive in!

Cleaning Tip #1: Remove Old Labels

We all know the old adage: Reduce, reuse, recycle, Rihanna. One of our favorite ways to cut back on trash is to repurpose glass jars and bottles, but getting those pesky labels off can be a bit of a struggle. The burn of your old vodka is exactly the kind of firepower you need to get those labels off.

While you let the vodka sit on the label, kick back and enjoy a sip of this new, improved take on the Harvey Wallbanger, made with our latest infusion Belle Isle Blood Orange.

Cleaning Tip #2: Sanitize Surfaces

We’re not saying you should dump your vodka down the drain, but did you know you can DIY a simple surface cleaner with it? All you need is vodka, water, and your choice of essential oils combined in a spray bottle.

Even though you just cleaned your bathroom, now it’s time to treat yourself by dirtying things back up. That’s right - we’re talking about our take on the classic Dirty Martini, swapping out vodka for the smooth taste of Belle Isle 100 Proof.

Ingredients:

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice and stir. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with olives, lemon twist, or any other garnish you'd like. Feel free to customize this recipe to make your ideal martini!

Cleaning Tip #3: Fight Off Home Invaders

Vodka’s amazing ability to burn your tastebuds is surpassed only by its capacity to kill pests that can infect your beloved houseplants. Vodka is a great alternative for stopping insect home invaders, as it is much gentler on your plant than harsh, chemical-filled insecticides. If you were hoping for a vodka-based solution to stopping actual home invaders, we’d suggest a taser instead.

Saving your plant from invasion is hard work. As a reward, mix yourself up this floral-inspired twist of The Aviation, featuring a splash of citrus using Belle Isle Ruby Red Grapefruit.

The Earhart

Vodka has done you wrong one too many times. It’s time to upgrade to a more refined spirit.

All photos by Joey Wharton.

Sick of constantly getting burned by vodka’s tasteless tricks and disappointing drinks? Leave those immature games in the past and upgrade to the smooth, bold, and dependably delicious taste of Belle Isle Moonshine. Not ready to let go of your tired, old go-to spirit? Here are three huge reasons why it’s finally time to ditch your vodka for something better.

REASON #1: YOU DESERVE A SPIRIT WITH SOME FLAVOR

Blood Orange Cosmo = the reigning kween of cranberry juice cocktails.

Be honest: how many vodka-crans can one human ingest in a lifetime? Yes, they go down easy, but isn’t that because they don’t taste like much more than watered-down cranberry juice that burns all the way down?

Vodka prides itself on being tasteless, and you deserve more than that. Get you a flavorful spirit you’ll be happy to savor, like the bold, bright Belle Isle Blood Orange! Kick those vodka-crans to the curb and shake up a Blood Orange Cosmo instead.

  • ¾ oz. fresh lime juice

Add all ingredients to a mixing tin over ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass. Garnish with a lime twist, or a dehydrated blood orange.
.

REASON #2: YOU’RE SO MUCH BETTER THAN BASIC

Chocolate Berry Boost: all of the boosted buzz with none of the crash and burn.

Okay, so you’re sleepy, but you still want to party. There’s no shame in that! You may think you’re doomed to a night of the shakes after sipping on a Vodka RedBull, but you’re wrong! There is a better (and less basic) way to get that boosted buzz you crave.

The caffeine-laced jolt of our Belle Isle Cold Brew Coffee will get you up and dancing without the harsh taste or night-ending crash. Try it solo with regular coffee, or for a fully refined treat, add a splash of Godiva Milk Chocolate Liqueur and raspberry whipped cream!

CHOCOLATE BERRY BOOST

Ingredients:

Preparation:

Add first three ingredients to an Irish coffee glass. Top with raspberry whipped cream**

**Raspberry Whipped Cream: Over medium heat, mix 1 cup muddled raspberries, 1 cup white sugar, and 1 cup water in a saucepan. Simmer for 5 minutes, then let cool and strain out the seeds. This will give you a tasty raspberry simple syrup! Add this syrup to chilled Heavy Whipping Cream at a 1:2 ratio, then shake or whisk vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Layer this whipped cream on top of your cocktail!

REASON #3: LIKE THINGS A LITTLE SWEET & SPICY? GET YOU A DRINK THAT CAN DO BOTH

Let our Southside of the James be your hero, baby.

SOUTHSIDE OF THE JAMES

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ oz. lime

  • ¾ oz. simple syrup

  • 2 mint sprigs (1 in cocktail, 1 for garnish)

Preparation:

Add all ingredients to a shaker tin over ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with second mint sprig.

Here at Belle Isle Moonshine, we pride ourselves on our versatility. We can be sweet, spicy, bold, soft, hot, cold, herbal, floral, sour–you name it, we can do it.

Take this simple Southside of the James. Our spin on a classic Southside, this drink is just as mind-blowing with our bright, citrusy Belle Isle Ruby Red Grapefruit as it is with the sweet heat of our Belle Isle Honey Habanero. Baby, we can multitask. Can your vodka do that?
